Fuel is presently being funded within the framework of a BAA to
develop a 12/24V, 40W, 400Wh, short version BA-8140/U primary battery
for battlefield power using 4th-generation zinc-air technology.
This technology has been under development for two years, beginning
with the development, fabrication, and delivery of 20 batteries
to the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory for their Dragon Eye
UAV program. Later adapted for more moderate-power ground missions,
gen4 zinc-air has demonstrated specific energies as high as 400
Wh/kg at the cell level, for discharge rates in the range C/12 –
C/36, which should achieve over 300 Wh/kg as a battery.
Gen4 should be the ultimate design for a zinc-air cell and battery.
The cell is simply an air cathode folded around a gelled anode,
the cathode serving as the cell housing. The three open edges are
sealed for leak-tight integrity.
